What is this tool?
The tracker monitors federal rulemaking activity in real time across key issue areas. It tracks rules as they move through the regulatory process—from initial review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), through final publication in the Federal Register. It's designed to help partners and advocates in the pro-democracy community stay informed and engaged on important regulatory actions.
What does “Today’s Updates” mean?
By default, the tracker opens in Today's Updates mode, which only shows items that were published today (for Federal Register records) or updated since the previous business day (for OIRA records). To browse the full database, switch to All Records using the toggle at the top of the page.
How often is the data updated?
Democracy Forward staff screen new regulatory activity each morning and push updates to the tracker daily. The Federal Register publishes new records every business day; OIRA typically publishes the prior business day's activity each morning, so OIRA updates are typically delayed by one day.
What do the colored column headers mean?
Each column represents a stage in the regulatory process. From left to right, they show (1) rules that have been received for OIRA review, (2) rules that have completed OIRA review, (3) published proposals that are open for comment, (4) proposals that have completed the comment period, and (5) final rules and notices.
What is OIRA and why does it matter?
OIRA is a White House office that reviews significant federal rules before they are published. Monitoring rules as they move through OIRA review gives us early visibility into what's coming.
